Samsung confirmed in July that it will be debuting its first tri-fold phone this year. It’s expected to come later this month, according to new information received by insider sources. While an Unpacked event is scheduled for this month, it will almost certainly focus on the S25 FE.

The trifold comes with a double inward folding mechanism; pre-orders to open for 50,000 units

Just this week, Huawei brought its second tri-fold, Mate XTs, to Chinese markets. The original Mate XT received more than a million pre-orders, though Samsung’s TriFold will only open orders for 50,000 units. ETNews has reported that the phone will supposedly come later this month and hit shelves in November.

Samsung will also keep from the G-Fold moniker, since the TriFold will come with a double inward fold mechanism. Newsworks has also reported that the phone will have a dedicated Unpacked event on 29th September, where the South Korean tech giant will also be unveiling its XR headset, Project Moohan.

Since the trifold will be a first for the foldable giant, it will be testing its waters with low intake. Part of the reason why Samsung’s only sticking to a relatively shorter production numbers is that it doesn’t want the trifold to overlap with an established Z Fold7, which came out earlier this year.

Google’s new Pixel 10a may stick to an older Tensor G4 chip, breaking the years-long tradition of the affordable “A-Series” coming with the same chipset as Pixel’s pricier models.

The Tensor G5 came out this year in the new Pixel 10 line, and an earlier codename leak suggested that Google may opt to cut corners to keep the price in check for the 10a. This phone is now expected to reuse Pixel 9’s Tensor G4, which also came with last year’s Pixel 9a.

Looking at how the Pixel “A-series” stacks up against other devices in its price range, the phone could be a tough sell with an older chipset, which was already weaker than other SoCs that came out around its time.

This time, Mystic Leaks (via Telegram) has posted some spec data for the Pixel 10a (codenamed “stallion”). Another area that the Pixel 10a will miss is UFS 4.0. The phone is listed to get a base 128GB storage option, at UFS 3.1. The display is listed to come with a peak brightness of 2,000 nits.

At this point, the Pixel 10a doesn’t look too exciting, but at the same time, it will be interesting to see how Google goes ahead with making this a competitive sell.

Two years ago, the iPhone 12 was banned in France for supposedly failing to pass some non-standard emission tests, which led to Apple pushing a software update, specifically for the region, to address this complaint. Now, the issue has come to light again.

Apple says the iPhone 12 is safe to use; calls out the French radio authority’s approach to testing

Apple will reportedly release a software update to reduce the transmitter power on the iPhone 12s after the EU has claimed that the phone does not pass health standards. This is because the previous update only rolled out in France, and not in other EU countries.

Now that the complaint has been brought up once again, Apple has disagreed that the iPhone poses any health risks, but is still readying a software update, which will be pushed in the coming weeks. In fact, Apple, in a recent statement, has said that it disagrees with the French radio authority, ANFR’s approach to testing the said phone.

We continue to disagree with ANFR’s approach to testing, but we respect the decision of the European Commission. Users can continue to use their iPhone 12 with full confidence, as always.

The issue from 2023 was addressed in an iOS 17.1 update. Apple had stated earlier that a software update wasn’t required and that it would work with regulatory bodies to rectify the issue, though it later ended up submitting an update to allow for the French government to reconsider the threat of banning the iPhone 12.

Huawei’s second-generation tri-fold is finally coming later next week, and we’re getting our first look at it, thanks to a teaser uploaded to Weibo channels. After the success of Mate XT, its successor is en route, but will only be available in Chinese markets, at least at launch.

Mate XTs carries the same design scheme; comes in a new color and stylus support

Samsung has been hard at work at bring its first “Galaxy Z TriFold” to the market, and while rumors have it that the South Korean tech giant will be debuting a triple-screen foldable, it certainly won’t be at next week’s Galaxy event (that’s dedicated to the Galaxy S25 FE and Tab S11).

Huawei has opened up pre-orders for the new Mate XTs, while giving us a brief glimpse into what the phone will look like. Largely, it carries the same design scheme from the original Mate XT, mostly with the octagonal camera bump, but comes in a new color: white and gold.

Not only this, but the Mate XTs also comes with stylus-support. It’s somewhat ironic that this addition comes at a time when Samsung is facing a heap of critisim for removing the S-Pen support on the Galaxy Fold 7.

The Mate XTs will be announced at a dedicated Huawei event on September 4th in China.

Nothing has recently been busted for using stock photos as part of its marketing materials for the new Phone (3). A few in-store demo units had five images labeled as “taken by the community,” but they were actually licensed stock photos, not shot on the Phone (3).

Some Phone (3) demo units claimed to show stock imagery as photos taken by Nothing’s users

In an anonymous tip to certain publications, the tipster has stated that the photos weren’t taken by community members, but in fact were bought by Nothing off the photo licensing platform, Stills. These images were touted as taken using the new Phone (3), when in fact they were captured using a professional camera.

It’s come to light that the London-based company hadn’t contacted the rightful owners before putting up the images as part of their marketing material.

A user captured a screen recording (via Android Authority) of a retail demo unit in New Zealand, which reads: “Judge for yourself. Here’s what our community has captured with Phone (3).” From this, it’s clear that the company is claiming that the photos were taken with their own device.

Here’s a list from Stills of links for the image shown in the ad above: spiral staircase, woman wearing a scarf, rounded headlight, a full glass, and person by the window.

Google will finally be bringing voice and video calls over satellite through WhatsApp to the new Pixel 10 phones. In what is a first for smartphones, the company is partnering up with Starlink to provide connectivity in cellular-dead zones.

In a tweet, Google has teased the new feature:

Pixel10 has you covered on and off the grid. Pixel devices will be the first to offer voice and video calls on WhatsApp over a satellite network starting 8/28.

The post also shows a brief demo video where you can make calls without a mobile connection. The caveat, however, is that the service will only be available to select carriers.

As of now, most phones only come with an emergency-only satellite messaging service, but Google has partnered up with Meta to push a bit further into bringing this level of practical communication. When you make a call through this method, you will see a satellite icon in the status bar.

At this point, services like T-Satellite only provide SMS and MMS, while others like Apple only offer the ability to send texts over iMessage, both only for emergency SOS.

Apple is set to keep the low-cost iPhone (‘e’) in its lineup for a second year in a row. The SE, which was replaced by the iPhone 16e earlier this year, saw an upgrade every two years or so. Now, industry sources have claimed to have information on the spec data and release schedule for the upcoming “iPhone 17e.”

Apple to keep ProMotion from the iPhone 17e, expected to be priced close to $500

Reliable leaker and insider, Digital Chat Station, has stated that the next budget iPhone, the 17e, will be coming in Spring next year. It is expected to retain the modest $500 price tag, with an upgraded A19 Bionic chip.

Image: DCS via Weibo

Other industry insiders, such as Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman (in his Power On newsletter), have also corroborated this claim.

The biggest upgrade, however, is said to be the final shift away from a notch-based display. The iPhone 17e is expected to come with a Dynamic Island pill-shaped cutout, similar to the more pricier Pros. Last year, the vanilla iPhone got the new screen style, and in 2026, the budget devices will also be getting their due upgrade.

One of the factors that will keep the iPhone 17e separate from the more pricier variants is potentially the absence of ProMotion. The $500 iPhone 17e is expected to come with a 60Hz display.

On the spec side, the iPhone 17e will retain the same 6.1″ display, will use a 12MP front-facing camera with FaceID, and will probably keep the 48MP sensor on the back, too. Of course, it isn’t known if this would be Apple’s “cheapest” iPhone next year, or if the Cupertino tech-giant has other surprises in store for next year, as well.

Huawei will push the new Mate 80 series to Chinese markets later this year and will look to schedule its release around the iPhone 17 launch. The new phones are expected to come with an upgraded Kirin 9030 SoC, a step-up from the chips found in Pura 80 Ultra and last year’s Mate 70 Pro.

Huawei is adding a micro-pump chip to keep the Mate 80 cooler under load

Staying on the 7nm process node, Huawei will upgrade the top-end phones in the Mate 80 lineup, presumably the Mate 80 Pro and Mate 80 Pro+, to the new chipset. The vanilla variant will most likely stick to the Kirin 9020.

This new chip is said to bring decent performance gains, with over 20% gain over last year’s Kirin 9020. Also, Huawei will be putting a new “micro-pump driver chip” to push better power numbers and to keep thermals in check, especially during intensive tasks like gaming or high-res recording.

The Kirin 9030, when compared to a bit older SoCs, like the Kirin 9000s in the Mate 60 Pro from 2023, shows a whopping 40% increase in performance figures alone. The GPU on the Kirin 9030 will also be upgraded, though the exact details of the Maleoon die aren’t known at this point.

Just like every year, Huawei is also rolling out a limited-edition RS model for the Mate 80 series. This will top the lineup this year, and will come with a ceramic back, a titanium alloy frame, and the dual-OLED display from last year’s Mate 70 RS Ultimate.

There hasn’t been a lot of word on pricing for the Mate 80 series just yet, but rest assured that we will keep you updated as new information becomes available.

U.S. President Trump is planning on pushing even more tariffs on semiconductors to put more pressure on foreign firms to build in America. The figure is now said to have climbed from 100% last week to 300%, and is set to be put into effect in the coming weeks.

Trump’s threats are likely to force companies to move to the U.S. to avoid losing clientele to local firms

Talking to journalists aboard Air Force One, Trump stated that he is “going to have a rate that is going to be 200%, 300%.” Twice in two weeks now, the U.S. President has put uncertainty into the supply chain in what looks like a way to “force” faster decisions from the companies.

Last week’s tariff hike plans from the U.S. have already put chipmakers in a position to make a decision to either abandon clientele in the U.S. or to shift their production lines to American soil. Either way, large companies like TSMC, Apple, and NVIDIA have been exempt because of sufficient investment in the country.

In a bid to quickly build local manufacturing lines, the President seems confident that the “threat” of high tariffs will push companies to move to the U.S. Trump has also said that he plans on keeping rates low in the early stages, allowing chipmakers to come and build first.

We reported last week that the mere threat of 100% tariffs has made companies directly negotiate the best possible outcome, since the tariffs would be exempt for chipmakers building from within the U.S. The industry is in somewhat of a “wait and see” mode, and such statements give rise to a lot of volatility in the market.

Earlier today, semiconductor equipment maker Applied Materials’ stock fell 14% on the news of increasing tariff rates. Micron, which manufactures chip memory, also saw a 5% drop in share prices.

Apple is now facing criticism for allegedly siding with OpenAI over rival AI firms on its App Store. In a recent round of arguments that spilled onto X, Sam Altman and Elon Musk, both co-founders of the ChatGPT-maker OpenAI, accused each other of using dark tactics to gain an unfair competitive advantage.

Musk believes Apple is siding with ChatGPT and is pushing xAI and Grok out of the spotlight

Musk, who is the founder of Grok’s xAI, publicly alleged that Apple is guilty of an “unequivocal antitrust violation,” citing that Apple’s App Store works in a way that favors OpenAI and makes it impossible for other companies to reach the #1 position on the platform.

It’s important to note that OpenAI is currently in a partnership with Apple that allows the latter to use ChatGPT’s services across its product line.

Under Musk’s post, however, readers added context that earlier this year, China’s DeepSeek took the top spot, and later, Perplexity in India’s App Store. The Community Notes also added that both events occurred after the OpenAI–Apple partnership was announced on June 10, 2024.

In a later tweet, Musk called out Apple again, alleging that the company had put ChatGPT in “literally every list where they had editorial control.” He wrote, “Hey @Apple App Store, why do you refuse to put either X or Grok in your ‘Must Have’ section when X is the #1 news app in the world and Grok is #5 among all apps?

To this, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, responded by stating that Musk had made a “remarkable claim,” and that X’s CEO is said to “harm his competitors and people he doesn’t like.

Then, it all spilled out…

In the replies to this post, Musk claimed that the claim was baseless since Altman had more views than most of his own posts, given that he has 50 times the follower count. To which Altman replied, “skill issue.

Apple has since refuted Musk’s claims and issued a statement to the BBC, stating that the App Store is “designed to be free and fair of bias.
