It can be frustrating to have a Windows computer continuously restart, as this can result in losing unsaved work, interrupting important tasks, or preventing you from using your computer completely.

Windows Is Continuously Booting After Every Restart
Windows Is Continuously Booting After Every Restart Fix

Continuous restarting of a Windows computer can be caused by a variety of issues, including hardware problems, software issues, and system configuration errors. Some of the most common causes include driver issues, malware infections, and faulty Windows updates. In this guide, we will provide step-by-step instructions on how to troubleshoot and fix the issue, so you can get your computer back up and running smoothly.

1. Perform a start-up repair.

Startup Repair in Windows automatically diagnoses and fixes problems that prevent Windows from starting properly. You can use it to fix computer issues that may cause your computer to constantly restart.

When you perform a startup repair, Windows scans your computer’s system files and settings for any issues and attempts to repair them. It also checks the startup process for any problems and tries to resolve them. This process can include repairing corrupted system files, restoring missing files, fixing boot sector issues, and more.

  1. Start your computer and wait for it to reach the Windows loading screen.
  2. When the Windows logo appears, press and hold the power button until your computer shuts down.
  3. Press the power button again to turn on your computer. Repeat this process two more times for a total of three times.
  4. Once you are in the Windows Recovery Environment, click on Troubleshoot > Advanced Options.
  5. Click on the Startup Repair option.
    startup-repair-11
    Startup Repair option
  6. The repair process will begin. Please wait for it to finish, as this may take several minutes to complete.
  7. Once the repair process is complete, your computer will automatically restart.
  8. Check to see if the issue has been resolved. If the computer no longer restarts continuously, you can continue using it normally.

2. Perform a system restore.

You can also perform a system restore to return to a system state that did not have the error at hand.

This process can restore system settings, files, and registry configurations to a known good state, effectively removing any changes or updates that may have caused the problem.

Here is how you can proceed with it:

  1. Access the Advanced options menu in WinRE by following the steps we have described above.
  2. In the following window, click on System Restore.
Click on the System Restore option
Click on the System Restore option
  3. Choose a restore point that was created before the issue occurred. This should be a point when your computer was functioning normally.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the system restore process.
  5. Once the restoration process is complete, your computer will restart. Check to see if the issue has been resolved. If the computer no longer restarts continuously, you can continue using it normally.

3. Uninstall the recent update.

Windows updates can sometimes cause a computer to restart continuously. This can happen if the update is incompatible with the computer’s hardware or software configuration, or if the update introduces a bug or error that causes the system to crash or fail.

To determine if a recent update is causing the issue, you can try to uninstall the update from the recovery environment. This can help remove any changes or configurations introduced by the update and restore your computer to a previous state, hopefully resolving the error in the process.

Here is how you can proceed:

  1. Access the Advanced options menu in WinRE by following the steps we have described above.
  2. In the following window, click on Uninstall Updates.
  3. Choose if you want to uninstall the latest quality or feature update.
    Uninstall an update
    Uninstall an update
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the uninstall process.
  5. Once the uninstall process is complete, restart your computer and check to see if the issue has been resolved.

If you manage to boot into Windows successfully after this, we highly recommend performing DISM and SFC scans. These will help you identify any underlying problems that might have contributed to the issue and fix them without requiring much of your input.

4. Unplug the faulty connections.

This troubleshooting method involves checking the physical connections inside the computer case to ensure that there are no faulty or shorted connections that may be causing the issue of continuous restarting.

This is because, in several cases, faulty or shorted connections can sometimes cause a computer to malfunction or fail to start properly, including causing continuous restarts. By checking and fixing these connections, we can potentially resolve the issue and allow the computer to run smoothly.

Here are the steps to follow for this troubleshooting method:

  1. Turn off the computer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Open the computer case by removing the screws or clips that hold the side panel in place.
  3. Locate the cables connected to the motherboard, including those for power, reset, speaker, front panel USBs, DVD, fan modules, etc.
  4. Check each connection carefully to ensure that they are properly seated and not loose or disconnected. Look for any signs of damage or wear on the cables, connectors, or motherboard itself.
  5. If you find any faulty or shorted connections, unplug them and replace them with new cables or connectors.
  6. Once you have checked and fixed all the connections, close the computer case and plug it back into the power source.
  7. Turn on the computer and check to see if the issue of continuous restarting has been resolved.

5. Reset Windows.

Resetting Windows can be a last resort solution to fix the issue of continuous restarting on a computer. It reinstalls the operating system and removes any corrupted or damaged system files that may be causing the issue of continuous restarting.

When you reset Windows, your computer’s operating system will be reinstalled to its default state. Essentially, your computer will revert to the way it was when you first purchased it or installed Windows. Upon initiating a reset, you will be presented with a choice to either preserve your personal files and data or remove them during the process. This allows you to decide whether you want to start with a completely clean slate or retain your personal files and data.

The error 0x80070001 generally appears when you try to install or update an operating system, application, or driver. It typically states ‘Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation’.

Install Error 0x80070001 in Windows
Install Error 0x80070001 in Windows Fix

This error indicates that the Windows Installer has failed to copy a required file from the installation media to the hard drive during installation. This could be due to various reasons such as corrupt installation files and incompatibility issues.

Below, we take a look at the troubleshooting methods that can help you resolve this error once and for all. Proceed with the one that fits your situation the best.

1. Convert the disk (If applicable)

If you are encountering the error while trying to install Windows 11 on your system with your OS partition configured to Dynamic disk, then the disk type is causing the problem.

With a dynamic disk, you can create a volume that spans multiple physical disks. It is typically used for advanced storage configurations, such as fault tolerance, software RAID, and multiple boot configurations. However, not all versions of Windows support dynamic disks. This is why, to avoid encountering installation problems when attempting to install Windows, it is recommended to use a basic disk instead of a dynamic disk.

This process can result in data loss so make sure you have backed up the data on the dynamic disk to be safe.

Here is how you can change the disk type to fix the problem:

  1. Press the Win + R keys together to open Run.
  2. Type diskmgmt.msc in Run and click Enter.
  3. In the Disk Management window, right-click the volume you want to convert to a basic disk and choose Delete Volume.
    Deleting Volume
  4. Now, right-click the dynamic disk and select Convert to Basic Disk.
    Convert to the basic disk
    Convert to the basic disk
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.
  6. After the conversion process has been completed, you can add new volumes to the basic disk by right-clicking unallocated space and selecting New Simple Volume.

Once this is done, you can try installing the new Windows version. Hopefully, the error will not appear again.

2. Delete the unnecessary files

This error can also pop up if you have insufficient disk space.

As we mentioned earlier, the 0x80070001 error often occurs when Windows cannot copy files from installation media to the hard drive during installation or update. This can happen if there isn’t enough free space on the hard drive to accommodate the installation files.

If this scenario is applicable, then this error can be avoided by deleting unnecessary files and freeing up space on the SSD before installing. One easy way of doing this is by using the Disk Cleanup utility of Windows. It is a built-in tool in Windows that allows you to free up space on your hard drive by deleting unnecessary files. The utility scans your hard drive and identifies files that are no longer needed, such as temporary files, log files, cached files, and other system files.

Here is how you can use it:

  1. Press the Win + S keys on your keyboard to open the Windows Search utility.
  2. Type Disk Cleanup in the search area and click Open.
  3. Once you are in the Disk Cleanup window, select the SSD drive that you want to clean up and click OK.
  4. Next, select the types of files that you want to delete, such as temporary files, recycle bin files, and system files, and click OK.
    Run the Disk Cleanup tool
    Run the Disk Cleanup tool
  5. Click Delete Files to begin the cleanup process.

Once the process is completed, close the utility. You can also head over to the Apps & features section of the Windows Settings app and look for the programs you no longer need. Removing them from the system will also free up space to perform new installations easily.

3. Modify Windows Registry

When attempting to install the same version of an operating system on your computer, you may encounter the 0x80070001 error due to old registry files that are causing conflicts. To address this issue, you can verify and fix these files.

Here is how:

  1. Press the Win + R keys together to open Run.
  2. Type regedit in the text field of Run and click Enter.
  3. Click Yes in the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Once you are inside the Registry Editor, navigate to the location below:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
  5. Move to the right pane and look for WUServer.
  6. Right-click on it and choose Delete.
  7. Delete the WIStatusServer value in a similar manner.
    Delete the key
    Delete the key
  8. Once done, close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.

Upon reboot, try proceeding with the installation again and check if the issue is resolved.

4. Unplug external peripherals

This error can sometimes occur when there are conflicts or compatibility issues between the external peripherals and the installation process.

You can resolve this issue by unplugging all external peripheral devices, including USB drives, printers, cameras, and other devices, before attempting to install or update Windows. After you have completed the installation or update process, you can reconnect the peripherals.

We recommend turning your computer off, removing all the unnecessary peripherals, enabling it back, and then restarting the installation process.

5. Install using Media Creation Tool

Since the error can be caused by corrupted or incomplete installation files, using the Media Creation Tool can help ensure that you have a fresh set of installation files that are not corrupted. This tool allows you to create a bootable USB drive or DVD with the latest version of Windows, which can be used to perform a clean installation or upgrade.

Additionally, the tool may also help identify and address other potential issues that may be causing the error.

6. Reset BIOS

In some cases, conflicts or errors in the BIOS settings can prevent an installation or update from taking place. Resetting the BIOS can help clear any incorrect settings and restore the default configuration, which can potentially resolve the error.

Resetting the BIOS for different computers can be different, depending on their manufacturer and model. In order to reset the BIOS, you usually need to press a key or key combination during the boot process. The key or key combination varies depending on your computer’s manufacturer and model, so it’s a good idea to check the manual or find out more.

You may find a reset BIOS option in different sections of the BIOS setup menu, depending on the manufacturer and model of your computer. However, the option is usually labeled as Reset to Default or Load Factory Defaults.

If you’re not comfortable resetting the BIOS yourself, it’s best to seek the assistance of a qualified technician or the manufacturer’s customer support.

The issue of ‘cmd pops up at startup with Unable to open xmrig.json’ typically occurs when the Windows operating system tries to run a command prompt (cmd) window to execute a program or script during startup, but it cannot find or access the required configuration file (xmrig.json) for that program.

CMD Popup 'Unable to Open xmrig.json' Error in Windows
How to Fix the CMD Popup ‘Unable to Open xmrig.json’ Error in Windows

The most common cause of this issue is a malware infection, as the xmrig.json file is related to the XMRig cryptocurrency mining software that can be used by cybercriminals to mine digital currencies on victims’ computers without their knowledge or consent.

Malware may have installed the XMRig miner on the affected computer, but the configuration file might be missing or deleted, causing the error message to appear.

However, it is also possible that the issue is caused by a legitimate program that requires the xmrig.json file to run, but the file is missing or has been moved to a different location. In this case, the program may need to be reinstalled or the file location may need to be updated.

In this guide, we will discuss the various troubleshooting methods you can try to resolve the issue. Proceed with the one that best fits your situation.

1. Run a malware scan.

Running a malware scan can help identify and remove any malware that may be causing the “unable to open xmrig.json” error message at startup.

If malware is installed on a computer, it can install additional software, including the cryptocurrency miner XMRig. Furthermore, malware can delete or modify the configuration file (xmrig.json) required to run the XMRig miner software. This can cause an error message to appear when the operating system attempts to run the miner program during startup.

A malware scan can detect and remove malware on a computer. The antivirus or anti-malware software scans system files, programs, and processes, removing any suspicious or malicious code and restoring the system to its previous state.

Here is how you can run a malware scan on your computer:

  1. Press the Windows + S keys together to open the Search utility.
  2. Search for Security and click Open.
  3. In the Windows Security app, click on Virus & threat protection.
  4. Click on Scan Options and select the type of scan you want to run. In a Quick Scan, malware is checked in the most common areas where it is likely to hide, while in a Full Scan, the entire system is checked.
    Click on Scan options
    Click on Scan options
  5. In case you cannot find the Scan options hyperlink, expand the Microsoft Defender Antivirus options dropdown and turn the toggle on in the menu. You should be able to see the Scan options hyperlink after completing this.
  6. Click on Scan now to start the selected scan.
  7. Once the scan is complete, the Windows Security app will display the scan results. If any malware is detected, you can click on “Start Actions” to remove it.

Alternatively, you can use a third-party antivirus or anti-malware program to run a malware scan on your Windows computer. Many reputable programs are available for free or for purchase online. To run a scan using a third-party program, simply follow the instructions provided by the software.

2. Use AutoRuns.

The troubleshooting method involves downloading and using Autoruns, a free Microsoft utility that helps manage startup programs on Windows. In this method, we will locate and delete any entries related to the AppData\Roaming\Dll folder, which may be causing the “unable to open xmrig.json” error at startup.

Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Download Autoruns from the official Microsoft website.
  2. Unzip the autoruns64.exe file and run it as an administrator.
  3. In the Autoruns Options menu, make sure that Hide Windows Entries and Hide Microsoft Entries are unchecked, and Hide Empty Locations is checked.
    Autoruns Options menu
    Autoruns Options menu
  4. In the Quick Filter box, type AppData\Roaming\Dll to search for any entries related to this folder.
  5. Right-click on any entries found and select Delete (you may see an entry named MSDllHelper).
  6. If you deleted any entries related to the AppData\Roaming\Dll folder, restart your computer.
  7. After restarting your computer, delete the C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Dll folder and the C:\Users\username.config folder.
    Delete the DLL folder
    Delete the DLL folder

By following these steps, any unwanted startup programs related to the AppData\Roaming\Dll folder will be removed, which may resolve the “unable to open xmrig.json” error at startup.

3. Uninstall the problematic program.

It is also possible for malware to enter a system after a program has been installed on Windows. Malware can be disguised as legitimate software, or it can be bundled with other software and installed without the user’s knowledge or consent.

In case you started encountering the issue after installing a new program on the system, removing the faulty software can help you fix the problem.

Here is how you can uninstall the problematic program:

  1. Press the Win + R key to open Run.
  2. Type control in the text field of Run and click Enter.
  3. Click on Uninstall a program under Programs.

  4. Scroll through the list of installed programs and locate the program you wish to uninstall.
  5. Right-click on the program to select it.
  6. Click on the Uninstall button from the context menu.
Windows could not start the Windows Firewall on Local Computer
    Uninstall the program
  7. Follow the prompts to complete the uninstall process and then restart your computer.

When performing a factory reset on a Windows computer, sometimes the process can get stuck at a certain percentage, such as 45%. When this issue occurs, the computer may freeze or become unresponsive. In some cases, you might see an error message or a spinning wheel on the screen. The reset process might also take much longer than expected, causing frustration.

Factory Reset in Windows Stuck At 45%
Factory Reset in Windows Stuck At 45% Fix

Temporary glitches or issues within the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System) typically cause a factory reset to become stuck. A potential cause of BIOS-related issues during a factory reset is a misconfiguration of the BIOS settings. It can also occur due to corruption errors within the system. When a system file becomes corrupted, it can cause errors during the reset process, preventing it from completing successfully. This can result from a variety of factors, such as malware infections.

Below, we have discussed the various troubleshooting methods you can try to resolve the issue. Follow the instructions carefully for successful execution.

1. Wait it out.

At times, being patient with the factory reset process can be helpful, especially if it seems stuck at 45%. This is due to the fact that the completion of the reset process may take longer, depending on various factors such as your computer’s hardware speed, the amount of data being erased, and the size of the operating system files to be installed.

In such cases, it is recommended to wait for at least an hour or more, depending on the size of the operating system and the speed of the computer’s hardware, before assuming that the reset process is truly stuck.

However, if the reset process does not show any signs of activity or progress, such as a frozen screen or no disk activity, proceed to the next method below.

2. Disconnect all external devices.

External devices can sometimes interfere with the Windows 10 reset process and cause it to hang or fail.

By disconnecting all external devices from your computer before running the reset process, you eliminate the possibility of any external device interfering with the reset process. This allows the reset process to focus solely on resetting your Windows operating system without any distractions or interruptions from external devices.

3. Run Startup Repair.

Running Startup Repair can be an effective solution for resolving issues that cause a Windows reset to become stuck. By using Startup Repair, you will be able to log in to your PC again to attempt another reset.

Running Startup Repair can also help resolve any issues that may be preventing the reset process from completing successfully. This is because some of the issues that can cause the factory reset to become stuck may also be related to problems with the system files or configurations.

For example, if some critical system files have become corrupted or damaged, they can cause the reset process to fail. Running Startup Repair can help repair or replace these files, allowing the reset process to proceed without any issues.

Here is how you can perform a startup repair:

  1. Turn on your computer and boot from the installation media that you used to start the factory reset process.
  2. On the next screen of Windows Setup, select your language preferences.
  3. Click on Repair your computer at the bottom left of the screen.
  4. Select Troubleshoot, and then click on Advanced options.
  5. Choose Startup Repair and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
    startup-repair-11
    Startup Repair option

Once the process completes, try resetting your computer again.

4. Use WinRE to reset.

If you have tried waiting long enough, you can also force a restart and boot into WinRE to perform the reset.

WinRE is a built-in recovery tool in Windows that allows users to troubleshoot and fix various problems with their systems. To use WinRE to reset your computer, you will need to access the WinRE environment by booting from the Windows installation media. Once you are in WinRE, you can follow the prompts to initiate a reset and choose the option to remove all personal files, programs, and settings.

Here is how you can do that:

  1. Turn off your computer using the power button.
  2. Start your computer and wait for the Windows logo to appear. Once it appears, press and hold the power button to turn off your computer.
  3. Repeat step 1 two more times. On the third time, allow your computer to boot normally. This will force your computer to enter WinRE automatically.
  4. On the WinRE screen, select Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.
    Reset this PC option
    Reset this PC option
  5. Choose the option to remove everything. This will erase all personal files, programs, and settings on your computer.
  6. Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the reset process.
  7. Wait for the reset process to complete. This may take some time, depending on the size of your operating system and hardware.

5. Perform a clean installation of Windows.

If the troubleshooting methods listed above do not work for you, then you can proceed with a clean installation as the last resort.

When the reset process gets stuck, it may be due to a software issue or corrupted files that prevent the process from continuing. A clean installation of Windows will wipe your computer’s hard drive and install a fresh copy of Windows, which means that any corrupted files or software issues that may have been causing the reset process to get stuck will be eliminated.

A clean install, however, will also remove all of your personal files and applications; therefore, you should back up your important data before proceeding. Compared to other fixes, it is a more time-consuming and technical process, so it is important to follow a guide or seek professional assistance if you are unsure.

The Windows 11 operating system is designed to provide a stable and seamless user experience, but several users have reported frequent and unexpected crashes. This issue can be caused by both hardware and software-related issues within the system.

Windows 11 Constant Crashing Issue
Windows 11 Constant Crashing Issue Fix

Hardware issues (most commonly Event ID 6008) can result from outdated drivers, faulty memory, or a damaged hard drive while corrupt system files and malware can cause software-related problems.

By taking the time to address the underlying cause of the constant crashing issue, you can restore the stability of your Windows 11 device and enjoy a seamless user experience. Below, we have listed different troubleshooting methods that you can try to fix the issue for good.

Before You Begin

Performing troubleshooting methods can be challenging if Windows crashes frequently, as the system may not remain stable for long enough to complete the procedure. In this case, before you get started with the troubleshooting methods, we suggest launching the system in Safe Mode.

Safe Mode is a boot option in Windows that starts the system with a minimal set of drivers and services. When troubleshooting, it can be used to identify and fix issues that may be causing problems with the system.

Once you are in Safe Mode, you can proceed with the troubleshooting methods we have listed below in this guide.

1. Perform System Scans

The first thing that we recommend doing is scanning your system for issues using the built-in troubleshooting utilities.

The System File Checker (SFC) and the Deployment Image Servicing and Management (DISM) are two tools that can help resolve issues with system stability and performance that may be causing the constant crashing of Windows.

SFC works by scanning for and replacing corrupted or missing system files with fresh ones stored in a cache on your computer. With DISM, you can repair and check the health of the entire Windows image, including system files and registry settings. DISM can help fix issues with the operating system image that may be causing crashes.

Here is how you can use these tools:

  1. Press the Windows + R keys together to open a Run dialog.
  2. Type cmd in the text field of Run and click on the Ctrl + Shift + Enter keys together. This will open Command Prompt as an administrator.
  3. Click Yes in the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Once you are inside the Command Prompt, type the command mentioned below and hit Enter:
    sfc /scannow
    Performing SFC Scan
    Performing SFC Scan
  5. Once the command is executed, proceed with the following command:
    DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
    dism-restorehealth
    Run the DISM scan

In the event that either tool finds any issues, it will try to fix them. If successful, the crashing will be resolved. You can then restart your computer to boot normally.

2. Run Memory Diagnostic Tool

A problem with the RAM, such as a malfunctioning module or a configuration issue, can also cause the computer to crash. To check if there is something wrong with the memory, we will be running the Memory Diagnostic Tool.

The Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool is a utility built into Windows that tests the computer’s memory (RAM) for errors.

It works by writing to and reading from memory as part of a series of tests. When the tool finds errors, such as incorrect data values or bad memory addresses, it will report them. Often, these errors indicate a memory issue, causing crashes, freezes, or hangs.

Upon completion of the memory diagnostic tests, the tool provides a report indicating if there are any errors. In case errors are found, you can use the report’s information to resolve the problem, such as replacing memory or troubleshooting other components.

To access the memory diagnostic tool in Windows:

  1. Press the Win + S keys together to open the Windows Search tab.
  2. Type Windows Memory Diagnostic in the search area and hit Open.
  3. Click on Restart now and check for problems (recommended) option to run the memory diagnostic tool. It will begin the scan when the computer restarts and provide a report on any memory errors found.
Run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool
Run the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool

You must keep in mind that the Memory Diagnostic Tool will only diagnose memory problems. You will need to perform the necessary troubleshooting steps depending on the results after analyzing the report.

If you want to learn more, please visit our in-depth guide on checking and improve your RAM’s Health.

3. Update Drivers

You might also be facing the issue because of outdated drivers.

In computers, drivers control the hardware components, like graphics cards, network adapters, and sound cards. Drivers that become outdated or corrupt may no longer be compatible with the operating system and the hardware they control, leading to stability issues and frequent crashes. They can also cause conflicts with other software on the system, which can lead to crashes.

The best way to resolve the issue, in this case, will be by updating the drivers. We will be using the Device Manager utility for this purpose.

Here is how you can do that:

  1. Type Device Manager in the search area of the taskbar and click Open.
  2. Expand all the categories and look for drivers with a warning sign (yellow exclamation mark) with them. This sign indicates that the driver is either outdated or corrupt.
  3. Next, right-click on the faulty driver.
  4. Choose Update driver from the context menu and then click on Search automatically for drivers.
    Search the system for drivers
    Search the system for drivers
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions to update the driver.
  6. Perform the same steps with all the faulty drivers in the system and then restart your computer. Hopefully, the crashing issue will be resolved upon reboot.

4. Undo the Recent Changes

If you started facing the issue after introducing a new change, the recent modification is likely to be the culprit.

This can include installing new software or hardware, updating existing software, or making configuration changes. The new software or hardware might not be compatible with Windows, which is causing the crash. Similarly, changes to the configuration of the system, such as changing the network settings or modifying the system registry, can also cause crashes.

In this case, you can fix the issue by undoing the recent changes. You can do it either by using the System Restore utility or by removing the faulty program/update manually.

To perform the steps manually, follow the instructions below:

  1. Type control in the text field of Run and click Enter.
  2. Click on Uninstall a program under the Programs section.
Windows could not start the Windows Firewall on Local Computer
    Choose Uninstall a Program
  3. Your computer should now display a list of all the programs it has installed. Right-click on the problematic one.
  4. Choose Uninstall and follow the on-screen instructions to proceed with the uninstallation.
    Uninstall the conflicting program
    Uninstall the conflicting program

If an update is causing the problem, then follow these steps:

  1. Follow steps 1-3 from above.
  2. Choose View installed updates from the left pane.
  3. Select the problematic update from the list by right-clicking on it and choose Uninstall.
    Uninstall the update
    Uninstall the update
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.

5. Scan for Malware

You can also be facing constant crashing if the system is infected with malware or a virus.

Malware can corrupt or modify system files, affecting the stability of the operating system. Additionally, it can cause kernel-level errors, which are serious errors occurring at the core of the operating system, as well as consume a large amount of CPU and memory resources which can lead to frequent crashing.

To prevent malware from crashing Windows, it’s important to keep your anti-virus program up-to-date, as well as your operating system with the latest security patches. You can use a free or paid anti-malware program, such as Windows Defender, Avast, or Malwarebytes. Make sure to install the latest version of the program and keep it up to date.

Here is a guide on how to use Malwarebytes to scan the system for malware and eliminate it.

6. Perform a Clean Install

In case none of the methods above work, then as the last resort, you can perform a clean install of Windows.

The process of installing Windows on a computer involves deleting all the existing data, settings, and programs, and installing a new system copy. During the clean install, all personal files, programs, and apps installed on the computer will be wiped, along with any downloaded software, so it might be a good idea to create a backup of all your important data.

This process is quite time-consuming, so we recommend proceeding with it only when you have enough time on your hands.

2. Check your network connectivity

As we mentioned earlier, when a user attempts to access a file or perform an action that requires communication with a server or network, but the server or network is unavailable or unresponsive, Word may be unable to complete the action and display the error message.

In this case, ensure that the network connection is active and stable and that the server is online and reachable. You can also try restarting the router or modem to resolve network issues and restore connectivity. If this scenario is applicable, clearing the DNS cache can help resolve DNS issues and improve connectivity.

3. Close potentially conflicting documents

The error can also occur when two or more Word documents are trying to access the same server or network resource simultaneously, causing a conflict or collision. In such cases, Word may be unable to complete the requested action and display the error message.

If this scenario is applicable, you can close the conflicting documents to fix the problem:

  1. Save all Word documents and close them.
  2. Reopen the document that was generating the error message and perform the same action that initially triggered the issue.

If the error message was caused by a conflict between two or more Word documents, closing the conflicting documents should resolve the issue.

4. Modify the OneDrive location

Another possible cause of this error is an incorrect location of the documents in OneDrive. If the targeted files are stored in an unrecognized or incorrectly labeled folder, Word may not be able to access them properly, resulting in an error message.

If this scenario is applicable, you can resolve the problem by ensuring that your targeted file is stored in the correct folder.

Here is how you can check if the location is accurate and modify it if it is not:

  1. Head over to the File Explorer and look for any OneDrive folders that aren’t recognized or labeled differently from others and look for the affected documents in OneDrive.
  2. If you notice any unrecognized, new folders, check if the targeted file is located in them and move it to the correct folder labeled Documents in OneDrive.
    Access the documents folder
    Access the documents folder
  3. Once the files have been safely moved, delete the unrecognized folder and try performing the action that initially triggered the error. Hopefully, you will no longer face the error once this is done.

5. Repair Office

Another fix you can try is repairing the Office, which will work by fixing any corrupted or missing files or settings that may be causing the error. When you repair the Office software, it will scan the installation for errors or issues and attempt to fix them automatically.

During the repair process, Word will be closed and all Office programs will be stopped. The repair process will then attempt to repair any damaged or missing files, settings, or components of the Office software that may be causing issues with Word. Once the repair process is complete, users can reopen Word and check if the error message has been resolved.

Here is how you can repair the Office installation to fix the issue at hand:

  1. Close all Office applications.
  2. Press the Win + R keys together to open a Run dialog.
  3. Type control in the text field of Run and click Enter.

4. Disable Firewall Temporarily (If Applicable)

Some antivirus software can interfere with other programs, causing them to crash or not function properly. It may sometimes flag a legitimate program or file as a virus or threat, which can cause problems if the software or file is quarantined or deleted.

If you are using a security program on your computer, there is a chance that either of these scenarios is applicable which is resulting in the error at hand.

The best way to proceed in this case will be by disabling the antivirus temporarily and checking if that makes any difference. We have showed the steps of doing so using the Avast antivirus. The steps for your antivirus may differ slightly but the basic principle remains the same.

Here is how you can proceed:

  1. Right-click on the antivirus program on the taskbar.
  2. Choose Avast shields control and click on Disable the program until the computer is restarted.

    Disable the antivirus program
    Disable the antivirus program

Once the program is disabled, check if you can successfully share your screen.

5. Repair Install Windows

If none of the troubleshooting methods have worked for you, you can try to perform a repair install.

Repair installs (also known as in-place upgrades) restore a computer’s existing installation and user data while reinstalling Windows. Using this method can resolve certain types of problems with the operating system, such as corrupted files or unstable operations.

As part of a repair install, Windows copies the installation files to your computer, checks for and fixes any problems with the existing installation, then installs the updated files and replaces the older versions, keeping your personal data and installed software intact. This process, however, is time consuming so we recommend proceeding with it only when you have sufficient time on your hands.

There are times when the Microsoft Store fails to download and install the latest updates from the installed apps on Windows. This issue can prevent users from accessing the latest features and security fixes of their apps, and can cause apps to become outdated or unstable.

Microsoft Store Won’t Update Apps
Microsoft Store Won’t Update Apps FIx

Typically, it happens when there is an issue within the Microsoft Store itself, such as incorrect system settings or cache and component issues. In some cases, unnecessary security interference can also lead to such issues.

Below, we have listed the different solutions you can try to fix this problem.

1. Run the Windows Store Troubleshooter

The first thing that we recommend you do is run the Windows Store troubleshooter.

This utility is a built-in diagnostic tool that can help resolve issues with the Microsoft Store app. It works by scanning the system for errors and can automatically identify and repair common issues that might be causing the problem.

Here is how you can run it:

  1. Press the Win + I keys together to open the Settings app.
  2. Navigate to System > Troubleshoot.
  3. Click on the Other troubleshooters option in the following window.

Click on the Other troubleshooters option
Click on the Other troubleshooters option
  4. Now, look for the Store app troubleshooter and click on the Run button for it. The troubleshooter will now perform a series of diagnostics and repairs to identify and resolve issues that might be preventing the Microsoft Store from updating apps. Wait for the process to complete.

    Run the Windows Store troubleshooter
    Run the Windows Store troubleshooter
  5. If the troubleshooter suggests any fixes, click on Apply this fix to proceed.

    Apply this fix
  6. Otherwise, click on Close the troubleshooter and move to the next method below.

2. Reset the Microsoft Store cache

As we mentioned earlier, corrupt Microsoft Store cache files can also lead to the issue, which is why we recommend clearing it as your next step.

Caches store information and data, such as installation files for apps, for quick and easy access. It is possible for the cache to become cluttered or corrupted over time, causing issues with the Store and preventing apps from being updated.

In a cache reset, you are essentially clearing out all temporary data and files. As a result, the Microsoft Store can start fresh with a clean cache, helping to resolve issues caused by corrupted or outdated data.

Follow these steps to clear the Microsoft Store cache:

  1. Press the Win + R keys on your keyboard to open Run.
  2. Type wsreset.exe in Run and click Enter.

    Reset the Microsoft Store cache
    Reset the Microsoft Store cache

Wait for the process to complete and then try installing the required updates again.

3. Disable the security program temporarily

When an antivirus program interferes with the Microsoft Store’s operation, it may detect the store as a threat and block its actions, including app updates.

You can solve such issues by temporarily uninstalling or disabling your antivirus software. Nevertheless, if you disable antivirus software, your computer may be vulnerable to security threats, so be sure to reactivate it once the issue has been resolved.

Below, we have discussed how to disable the Avast antivirus on your Windows computer. These steps might be different for you if you are using another program:

  1. Right-click on the antivirus icon in the taskbar.
  2. Choose Shields control > Disable until the computer is restarted.

    Disabling the antivirus suite
    Disabling the antivirus suite

Once the program is disabled, try updating the apps again to see if this fixed the problem.

4. Disable metered connection

If your internet connection is metered, that can also result in the problem under consideration.

Metered connections in Windows allow you to limit the amount of data downloaded and uploaded over a wireless network. A metered connection reduces background data usage, including data used by the Windows Store, resulting in this problem.

When you disable the metered connection, Windows will allow you to download updates and other data without any restrictions. This could resolve the issue of the Store not updating apps.

Here is how to do it:

  1. Open the Settings app by pressing the Win + I keys together.
  2. Choose Network & internet from the left pane and click on Wi-Fi.
  3. Select your Wi-Fi network and click on the Properties option.

5. Repair the store app

Another thing that you can try is repairing the Store app using the Settings app. A repair process replaces damaged or missing files in the Microsoft Store app as well as reconfigures it to its default settings.

To repair the Microsoft Store app, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Win + I keys together to open the Settings app.
  2. Choose Apps from the left pane.
  3. Click on Apps & features on the right side of the window.
  4. Scroll down to locate the Microsoft Store app and click on the three apps associated with it.
  5. Choose Advanced options.

    Access the advanced options

  6. Scroll down to the Reset section and click on the Repair button.

Wait for the process to complete and after it is done, the Microsoft Store app should function properly and you should be able to update apps normally.

6. Re-register the store app

Alternatively, you can re-register the Store app to resolve the problem as well.

Re-registering the Microsoft Store app involves adding the app back to the Windows operating system using the Add-AppxPackage PowerShell cmdlet. A re-registration reconfigures an app and replaces any damaged or missing files with fresh ones from the Windows image.

Here is how you can proceed:

  1. Press the Win + S keys to open the Search utility.
  2. Type Powershell in it and click on Run as administrator.
  3. Click Yes in the User Account Control prompt.
  4. Type the following command and press Enter in the Powershell window:
    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

    Re-register Microsoft Store
  5. Wait for the process to complete and then restart your computer.
Once your computer has restarted, try using the Microsoft Store app again to see if the issue has been resolved.

If none of the methods above work, you can try resetting Windows. If you do not want to try that yet, we suggest getting in touch with the Microsoft support team and explain the issue to them. They will hopefully be able to find the exact cause of the issue and suggest a relevant fix.
